Setting Up The Pediatric High Flow Ventilator

Parts of the Ventilator

Setting up the Ventilator

  • Connect the yellow (air) and green (oxygen) gas tubes to the wall (or tanks).
  • Connect oxygen tubing from the top of the humidifier plate to one of the two oxygen flow meters. One has finer control but a smaller range. Aim for 2 L/kg and pick the appropriate flow meter.
  • Connect the temperature probe
    • One end connects to the heater (with the blue ring)
    • The middle connects to the humidifier at the takeoff of the heated circuit (blue corrugated tubing)
    • The other end connects distally near where the nasal cannula will connect.
  • Connect the nasal cannula
    • Pick the appropriate size out of the Broselow cart
    • Connect one end to the end of the heated circuit (blue corrugated tube)
    • Place the other end on the patient (make sure the prongs are properly facing). You may need to swaddle the kid and have parents hold them down.
    • Then secure with adhesive.
  • Finally you can connect to a bag of saline for humidified saline.
