ACLS – Therapeutic Hypothermia

This final video looks at post-resuscitative care. This includes proper management of blood pressure, blood sugar, treatment of coronary artery disease and initiation of therapeutic hypothermia.

So I focus mostly on that last one: pay attention mostly to how to induce it and in whom you’d induce it.

Very interesting concept. I have never learned about therapeutic hypothermia in a post ACLS patient before. Thanks for the introduction! I find it especially interesting that you inhibit the natural response mechanism to hypothermia with fentanyl

  2. Jenn says:

So rewarming would include doing the opposite — any particular order/technique? Stop fentanyl, warmed IVF at the same rate, and warm blankets/bair hugger?

  3. Jeff says:

Only had a chance to see this utilized once thus far on rotation, thank you very much for helping explain the concept behind it.

  4. Nisha B. says:

It was particularly helpful to see the complications in terms of increased coagulation, decreased immune function, and hyperglycemia with cooling.

  5. Daniel S. says:

Good video for a topic I’ve had little exposure to on rotations. I was also unaware that patients can become coagulopathic as a complication of therapeutic hypothermia. Very interesting.
